The shoto fighter who served as one of the marquee newcomers of the Street Fighter III series of games, Sean Matsuda. One of the initial struggles that SFIII had was the lack of any returning characters from Street Fighter II or Alpha (more so the former) beyond Ryu & Ken. While Third Strike is often heralded as the best entry in the franchise by the core fanbase (myself included), SFIII as a whole took a pretty difficult road towards that fame given the issues that its predecessors (New Generation & 2nd Impact) had. Street Fighter III was an interesting time for the franchise. Now if we can get an outfit redesign in a sequel, I'd be happy. Since shes a new character shes not very fleshed out or noteworthy to the lore of SS, so I don't think shes amazing as a character yet, but I welcome any efforts to ad not just black characters but black women. Though I suspect this is partly because almost all "foreigners" are depicted with different color eyes to further differentiate them in Japanese games/media but -shrug- I just live here, not design fighting game characters. Also a point for a game with a heavy anime aesthetic not giving her the big pink lips, being a wild jungle girl, and having her be dark in the artwork AND in game. Her hair is great, not to mention loving that its dyed purple, shes muscular which fits her weapon and story occupation of being a carpenter, and despite having "somewhere in the sea" as her birthplace profile the design team specifically wanted to make an African descended character (many signs seem to point to Madagascar). Sean's hard-hitting super moves in SFIII: New Generation really helped define the animation style of the game. While my personal hate for her outfit not withstanding, I like the general idea behind her. While being a decent fighter (yet characteristically sloppy in some areas), Sean also provides some subtle comic relief for the series. I also enjoyed seein his cameo in MVC1 during Ryu's intro. Very differently from Ryu & Ken, especially as he developed in 2nd Impact and (especially) 3rd Strike. with his very unique spin on the classic shoto style moves. Was going to be the only "shoto" fighter in SFIII, but (thankfully)Ĭapcom decided they still needed Ken and Ryu (and Akuma). You could say Sean put the streets back in Street Fighter. Sean really help set the "vibe" of the SFIII series.
